Vietnam tour package from Nepal

Vietnam tour package from Nepal: best routes, itinerary, and budget

Nepal to Vietnam is one of those trips where the effort required is low relative to what you get. No direct flights, yes. But the connection through Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur runs under eight hours door to door, the e-visa costs US$25 and takes a few minutes to apply for online, and the cost of being in Vietnam, once you land, is among the most affordable in Southeast Asia. A full meal at a street food stall in Hanoi can cost NPR 200. A three-night Ha Long Bay cruise on a decent mid-range junk costs less than a weekend in Pokhara.

For Nepali travelers looking for something beyond Thailand and Malaysia, Vietnam hits a sweet spot: diverse enough to fill 10 days without repeating yourself, compact enough that even a five-day trip feels complete.

Getting there: flights from Kathmandu to Vietnam

There are no direct flights from Kathmandu (KTM) to any Vietnamese airport. Every routing involves at least one stop. The main connection hubs are:

  • Bangkok (BKK/DMK) via Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, or budget carriers
  • Kuala Lumpur (KUL) via AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines
  • Singapore (SIN) via Singapore Airlines or Scoot

Total travel time, including layover, runs between five and eight hours on Bangkok connections and slightly longer through Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Entry cities are Hanoi (HAN) in the north or Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) in the south.

One practical note: if you are planning a full north-to-south trip, book an open-jaw ticket. Fly into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City, or reverse. Avoiding the backtrack saves a full day and usually costs the same as a return fare to a single city.

Vietnam visa for Nepali passport holders

Vietnam’s e-visa terms are straightforward. Nepali citizens are eligible.

  • Cost: US$25 (roughly NPR 3,300)
  • Validity: 90 days, multiple entry
  • Where to apply: evisa.gov.vn, the official Vietnamese immigration portal
  • Processing time: typically three business days, though applying a week ahead is the safer habit
  • Documents required: passport scan, passport photo, payment – no bank statement, hotel voucher, or flight ticket needed at the application stage

One step many travelers miss: Vietnam also requires a Digital Arrival Card, submitted online within 72 hours of arrival. It is free and takes three minutes, but skipping it creates delays at the immigration counter. Fill it at dichvucong.gov.vn before you fly.

Popular package routes from Nepal

Most packages fall into four standard configurations. Each works as a standalone trip. Combined, they build a full Vietnam run.

Hanoi and Ha Long Bay (north Vietnam) – 5 to 6 days

This is the most requested itinerary from Nepali travelers. Hanoi rewards walking and is worth two days in the Old Quarter, not one. Ha Long Bay, a two-to-three hour bus from the city, is a complete change of pace. One traveller on TripAdvisor: “a very chilled contrast to Hanoi.” The karst formations rising out of the water look exactly like the photos. Overnight cruises are the standard format, and two nights on a mid-range junk is better than one.

Da Nang and Hoi An (central Vietnam) – 4 to 5 days

Da Nang is the access city. Hoi An, an hour south, is the reason people come. The Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site with lantern-lit streets and a trading port district that photographs well. It can feel crowded in peak season. Four days in this region is enough. Two nights in Hoi An, with day trips to My Son or the Marble Mountains, is the better split.

Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta (south Vietnam) – 4 to 5 days

Ho Chi Minh City, still commonly called Saigon, moves faster than Hanoi. The War Remnants Museum is one of the most affecting history museums in Southeast Asia. The Cu Chi Tunnels, 40km north of the city, are a full-day trip that most visitors call a highlight. The Mekong Delta adds a genuine contrast: floating markets, narrow canals, and river delta villages that feel nothing like the cities. This combination packs well into four days with early starts.

Full Vietnam, north to south – 10 to 14 days

The standard routing is Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, or reverse, with three or four stops: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, an optional detour to Sapa for the rice terraces, Da Nang and Hoi An for the middle section, and HCMC with the Mekong Delta to close. Internal flights connect the regions cheaply, typically under US$50 per leg booked in advance. This format is the best option for first-time visitors who have the time.

What a package typically includes

A standard Vietnam tour package from a Nepal-based operator will cover:

  • Return international flights (KTM to Vietnam and back)
  • Airport transfers at each end
  • Hotel accommodation (3-star or 4-star depending on tier)
  • Guided city tours and included excursions
  • Ha Long Bay cruise for northern itineraries
  • Some meals, typically breakfasts and one or two dinners

What it usually does not include: travel insurance, the Vietnam visa fee, personal spending, and meals outside the itinerary. Read the inclusions before comparing prices across operators. The gap between an NPR 85,000 quote and an NPR 150,000 quote is often flights.

Budget breakdown in NPR

These are approximate per-person figures for a couple or small group. Solo travelers typically pay a supplement.

NPR 80,000 to 100,000 (budget): Land package only, or basic flights with 3-star hotels and minimal guided inclusions. Works if you are comfortable organising internal transport and some meals independently. Best for travellers with some Southeast Asia experience.

NPR 150,000 to 200,000 (mid-range): Return flights included, 3 to 4-star hotels, guided tours, Ha Long Bay cruise on a mid-range vessel, airport transfers. This is the most popular band for Nepali travellers. For a seven to eight day trip, it covers everything without cutting corners.

NPR 300,000 and above (premium): Return business or premium economy flights, 4 to 5-star hotels, private guides, a luxury Ha Long Bay junk, and premium dining inclusions. Worth it if Vietnam is a special trip rather than a budget getaway.

The e-visa (NPR 3,300) adds to any package. Budget an additional NPR 5,000 to 10,000 per person for personal spending, local transport, and anything the package does not cover.

Best time to visit Vietnam from Nepal

October through April covers the safest window for most of the country.

November to March is the peak season for Hanoi and Ha Long Bay. Cool and dry, with good visibility on the bay. Temperatures in Hanoi run 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, which some travelers find surprisingly cold after expecting tropical heat.

March to May works well for Ho Chi Minh City and the south, which stays warm and relatively dry through this period.

Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An) has its own weather pattern. October through December brings heavy rain and occasional flooding to the central coast. If your itinerary centers on Hoi An, plan for March to August instead.

June to September is monsoon season across most of the country. Not impossible to visit, but expect rain daily in the north and disrupted Ha Long Bay cruises.

Practical tips before you go

Currency. Vietnam uses the Vietnamese Dong (VND). Verify the current NPR exchange rate before travel, as it shifts. Cash is non-negotiable for street food, markets, small shops, and taxis. Vendors rarely have change for large notes, so carry small denominations. Change money at a bank or authorized exchange counter; hotel exchange rates are consistently worse.

SIM card. Buy one at the airport or, more cheaply, at a mobile shop in the city center. Vietnamese SIMs from Viettel or Vinaphone offer data plans under US$5 for a full week of 4G. Most navigation, translation, and Grab (the regional ride-hail app) require data, so this is not optional.

Food. High footfall at a street stall is a reliable signal that the food is fresh. Avoid dishes that have been sitting out in heat. Ice in drinks is lower risk if it is the cylindrical, hollow-center type, which is made commercially. Pho, banh mi, and Vietnamese egg coffee are worth trying from the first day.

Getting around. Between cities, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet operate cheap domestic routes. Within cities, Grab is the clearest option for non-Vietnamese speakers. Download it before landing.

Health. No mandatory vaccinations are required for Nepali travelers entering Vietnam, but Hepatitis A and Typhoid cover is worth having. Travel insurance is your own cost to arrange, and most Nepal-based operators will remind you, but not include it.

Booking through a Nepal-based operator

Booking through a Nepal-based operator and piecing the trip together independently often produce the same trip quality. The difference is in the details: airport pickups that arrive at the right terminal, Ha Long Bay cruise bookings that survive a last-minute weather rebooking, and a phone number that works when the Kathmandu departure is delayed.

For a first trip to Vietnam, that reliability is worth the modest premium a local operator charges. Compare two or three operators, verify what is actually in the quote, and ask specifically about the Ha Long Bay cruise tier. That single component has the widest quality range in any Vietnam package, and the difference between a budget overnight barge and a decent mid-range junk is significant enough to matter.

Vietnam books up fast around Nepali holidays and the December to January peak window. If you are planning around Dashain and Tihar or the winter school break, lock in the package six to eight weeks ahead. Ha Long Bay cruises in particular run close to capacity between November and February.
